Modder Turns Gacha GameCube Keyring Into Camera Button & Tracker

Modded Gamecube Keyring

Fans of modding and custom handheld consoles will no doubt have seen haihiasb’s work before. He’s the brains behind some epic & unique handhelds that we’ve covered here on Retro Dodo such as the modded PS1 roulette controller, and now he’s turned his talents to making a certain keychain more useful.

Nintendo’s new Gacha keychain range boasting features from SNES, N64, and GameCube controller buttons and joysticks have taken the internet by storm, with those lucky enough to travel to Japan heading to the Nintendo Store to try their luck and see which controller part drops out, and those not able to travel heading to eBay to pick up the sets from people who have made the journey.

Haihaisb, whose real name is Hairo Satoh, has modded the A button on his GameCube controller keychain to have multiple functions when hooked up to his phone, turning this iconic trinket into a useful bit of kit. Tapping the A button once controls his camera shutter and takes a picture. Tapping it twice brings up a function that finds your phone and assumedly works the other way around when trying to find your keys!

Hairo has taken to social media with his new creation and told his followers that the mod was pretty easy to do and that it doesn’t require any soldering. He’s planning on letting other keyring holders know how to do the same thing soon. I’m just waiting until someone puts a little screen in one of these things and ends up loading Doom onto it. Come on, we know it won’t be long!
