Crazy Taxi fever has hit the world once again with the upcoming arrival of Sega's remake. I played the original on the Dreamcast like pretty much each and every one of you reading this article right now, and I've spent many a Friday night testing out my skills down at my local gaming arcade during my 30s. I can't believe it's been almost 27 years since this game came out on the Dreamcast (and almost 28 since it released in arcades!).
Netflix and Sega have announced in a press release that they're working to bring a film adaptation of Crazy Taxi to our screens, though it's not clear as of yet whether they're thinking of 'the big screen' or our living room screens. They're also wanting to work with Sega's wider game catalog, creating adaptations of Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven.
The press release says that 'the lineup will be diverse in genre, including live-action comedies, children's animation, and live-action crime action,' with Netflix championing a new Sonic animated series. Toru Nakahara, Executive Producer, Film/TV Series at Sega Corporation, backs this up by saying they want to bring 'the cute yet cool adventures of Sonic and his friends' to viewers in their Sonic project, so they're probably aiming the release towards younger viewers. Stranger Than Heaven will be a live-action film based on the Yakuza, so definitely an adult action film. It seems like they're thinking about something for all ages with these three releases!
Back to Crazy Taxi; we've already got the writers, with Dan Gregor and Doug Mund taking charge of the film. They're the minds behind the recent reboot of The Naked Gun, which could be a good or a bad thing depending on how much you thought Lesley Nielson was rolling in this grave during the entire thing. It's going to be produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Asher, and Toru Nakahara, all of whom have worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog series, so at least Sega will have people who have worked on their IPs putting their own spin on the film - we don't want to have a Super Mario Bros. Jankel and Morton situation again!

Crazy Taxi is set to be a comedic action movie, which makes sense why they've brought Gregor and Mund into the equation. I wasn't a fan of their Naked Gun reboot (sorry guys), but I think they could do well with this Crazy Taxi adaptation because it has that same zany feel to The Naked Gun movies.
There's no information as to when the Crazy Taxi film will be out yet, as the duo are still writing the screenplay, so it's going to be a little while. So, you better kick back and play the original for a while (like I hope Gregor and Mund are doing right now), and get ready for the remake in 2027!
