Being able to play games in your browser wherever you are on your laptop, or work PC, without your boss knowing. Whether you played this on the GameCube or the Dreamcast back in the day, the fact that there's a fan-made recreation of the game that you can go and play right now on any device should is a pretty cool achievement... but there is a catch,

The website in question is PSOReBorn.com, and it allows you to run Phantasy Star Online at 60fps while playing both online or offline. I've been messing around with offline solo play this morning and it works an absolute dream. Online multiplayer is easy to get running, and it supports all manner of controllers from hooking up actual remotes to just using your device's touchscreen.
There has, however, been some controversary surrounding the release and, you guessed it, the use of AI in the project. The mind behind psoreborn, aka Bottled_Captain, has relied heavily on AI to write code, squash bugs, and to help out with making the multiplayer mode. According to sources across the internet, the project has been heavily vibe-coded, which is dissapointing to hear and something that, because of that fact, people will probably avoid with a barge pole. There's also rumours that the creator is involved with cryptocurrency too, which while not our remit and something that we cover here at Retro Dodo, will also put some people off.
It's dissapointing to know how much AI has been used in this project - we're becoming used to people using a little bit of AI when coding, but heavily AI vibe coded projects are something that we can't support. I was really excited for this project, and as I said it's a shame as getting the game to run in browser with online multiplayer at 60fps is a great achievement.
