We're getting GTA games on the 3DS before we get GTA 6, and the 3DS isn't even in production anymore! If you keep up to date with your fan ports and reverse-engineered wizardry from the retro gaming community, then you'll know all about the reverse-engineered versions of GTA III, Vice City, and Liberty City Stories - re3, reCV, and reLCS.
So who's behind this little gem then? Well, the work has been completed by @EpicReds0817 , with all three games now working on the 3DS with restructured controls for Ninty's handheld and a lower screen interface for you to display your map, as well as touch controls and a cheat-code keyboard.
Here's a rundown of some of the key features of each game running on the 3DS.
GTA III
- Dark-blue lower-screen interface.
- Faster loading and smoother streaming.
- Removed motion blur; fixed vehicle materials and several crashes.
- Final-mission music: 'push it to the limit'.
Vice City
- Pink lower-screen interface.
- Faster loading; restored particles and vehicle highlights.
- Fixed character and vehicle polygons, water seams and flight-related crashes.
- Final-mission music: 'Self Control'.
Liberty City Stories
- Completed the unfinished reStories/reLCS campaign implementation for New Nintendo 3DS.
- Red lower-screen interface and lightweight vehicle reflections.
- Fixed missions, saves, world changes, cutscenes and vehicle bugs.
- Custom text cheats and final-mission music: 'Chase'.
According to EpicReds0817, the side missions and other optional activities in the game haven't yet been verified, but the main story can be played through in its entirety in each game on the 3DS. It's not 'all' 3DS consoles though - the port will work on the New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and the New Nintendo 2DS XL, or a system that's capable of playing 3DSX builds. OG 3DS and 2DS systems won't be able to cut the mustard, however, with the reGTA collection needing the extra processing power and memory that come with the New 3DS family.
You'll need to build the ports yourself and add your legally acquired ROM for each game. Runtime overrides and HOME Menu artwork are included, but the executables and devkitARM toolchain are not included. Head to GitHub to get started!
