Taki Udon is a name you will all know very well by now. He's the brains behind the SuperStation, a fantastic PS one-inspired FPGA console with excellent performance stats. And while it was initially designed to play PS1 games, the FPGA allows you to download other cores and play games from a multitude of consoles on one machine.
I thought Taki was putting all of their eggs in one basket when he announced the SuperFPGA console based on the SNES earlier this month, but now he's dropped a teaser to let us know that his first FPGA handheld, the SuperStation Pocket, is almost ready to roll. And it looks like it's about to go head-to-head with the Analogue Pocket!
In his latest post, Taki tells us that he's been 'working on this the entire year'. The SuperStation Pocket will play GB, GBC, and GBA cartridges, just like the Analogue Pocket, and the FPGA allows you to play cores up to PS1 and N64 with 4K output thanks to an affordable dock. It'll also be open source from launch.
We’ve been working on this the entire year and our first FPGA handheld is almost done. Plays GB, GBC, and GBA carts. Huge FPGA to power cores up to PS1 and N64. Up to 4K HDMI output via an affordable dock. Unbeatable latency. Open source. From $1_ _ at launch. https://t.co/ZR2lpaPhgq

But what we really want to know is how much it's going to cost. The Analogue Pocket costs $239 for the base colours. Taki has stated that his console is going to start with a 1, so we already know it's going to be cheaper than the Analogue Pocket. How much cheaper remains to be seen, but that's promising for gamers in a cost of living crisis.
The handheld, which, like the SuperStation, is coming to us from Retro Remake, looks very much like the Game Boy Pocket. It's a cool design choice compared to making it look like the GBC or GBA. I hope it comes in the classic DMG grey for maximum nostalgia too, and who knows; if the new SuperStation console colours take off, then we might also get those translucent shells for the SuperStation Pocket too!
I'll have more on the SuperStation Pocket when it arrives, but for now, have a look at some of the best Game Boy Colour games that you could play on this when it drops!
