ModRetro's Latest M64 Firmware Update Brings Some Fresh Features

M64 Firmware Update

Many of you likely already have your hands on the ModRetro M64, especially if you ordered it on day one; if not, yours will likely be arriving soon, just in time for a new M64 firmware update that brings an array of new features to both the console, the controller and those waiting for open-source files to tinker with.

ModRetro has already shared their update roadmap, one which spans over the next 12 months, offering an array of new features coming to both your console and controller. The latest firmware update 1.24.3 is now available to install and download to your M64 via WiFi.

This update offers a few minor features that will undoubtedly evolve your gaming experience slightly. So what's new?

Controller Updates

  • Wireless Rumble: Fully enabled Virtual Rumble Pak in this release.
  • Wired Rumble & Accessories: Improved Virtual Rumble Pak performance in wired mode, and accessory swapping settings now persist across power cycles.
  • Joybus Reliability: Major stability and performance improvements.
  • Wired Controller Fixes: Resolved random wake events and connection state issues.
  • General Stability: Additional underlying controller performance fixes.

Console Updates

  • Audio Improvements: Enhanced 48kHz audio output compatibility.
  • Display: Added a manual 50Hz / 60Hz resolution toggle with improved Auto-mode visibility.
  • Fixes & UX: Fixed "Forget All Controllers" debonding, resolved network menu overlaps, updated wireless connection animations, and overall system stability fixes.

Alongside console and controller updates, ModRetro has now shared the first batch of open-source exports for the M64, releasing the mechanical and electrical designs for both the console and cartridge, allowing you to tinker as you wish and dive deep into what makes these products so great. It will be exciting to see what the community do with these.

This is the first of many updates coming to the M64 over the coming weeks and months, they're clearly hard at work, and even shadow-dropped two new games for the Chromatic handheld yesterday too!
