So, you've ordered your brand new ModRetro M64, you're awaiting delivery and are curious as to what updates are on their way. If you've read our full written review and comparison video of the Analogue 3D, you'll know that there are lots of features I am still waiting on. The most important being save states, which are coming.
Shortly before the M64's launch, ModRetro shared its software roadmap to show customers what's on the horizon. Originally, they were not going to launch with Overclocking, but the engineers have been hard at work to make that a launch feature. Below is the roadmap for what's coming.

Phase 1 (M64 Console)
- Built-in Controller Pak - Enables an in-console controller pak for storing game saves.
- Low Latency Video Output - Maximise frame delivery rate.
- Plug-n-Pair - Automatically pair the M64 Pro controller via a wired connection.
- Forced Progressive Mode - Progressive-scan output for interlacing games. Makes the image look a little sharper, less flickery, and removes potential artefacts.
- Compatibility Fixes - Addresses low FPS bugs found in games, likely to increase game compatibility, which you can see their full list here.
Phase 2 (M64 Console)
- In-game Notifications - System events shown in an overlay menu. Likely for battery and bugs, but could potentially mean achievements are coming, which would be cool and totally something Palmer would do.
- Virtual Controller Pak - Save and load controller paks from SD cards.
- More compatibility fixes - Address remaining bugs and game crashes. Likely to increase game compatibility even more.
Phase 3 (M64 Console)
- Chromatic Transfer Pak - Use Chromatic as a N64 Transfer Pak.
- Chromatic Pass Through - Play your Chromatic through the M64, via USB-C.
- Save states - Snapshots and restore game data.

Phase 1 (Controller)
- Wireless Rumble - Experience wireless rumble feedback in certain N64 games.
- BLE SCI (Ultra Low Latency) - BT 6.2 for the lowest latency input possible.
- USB Gamepad Support - Use the M64 controller on your other devices via USB.
Phase 2 (Controller)
- Built-In Controller Pak - Enables an emulated Controller Pak within your M64 Pro controller.
- Wireless Update - Update your M64 controller using the M64 console.
There's a wide range of updates coming over the next few months, and likely deeper into 2027. I am personally looking forward to save states and Chromatic support. I have asked the ModRetro team if they have any timelines for this regarding when the phases will start and finish, but as of now no response. I'll update this article if I hear back from them, or join our free weekly newsletter to not miss out.
