Retro gaming is only getting increasingly popular with more and more devices being released into the wild.
Joining the fray is the new collab between PLAION and Atari – the Atari 2600+, a new version of the iconic Atari 2600.
This revamped console is a faithful recreation of the original Atari VCS, later rebranded as the 2600, that pioneered and popularized home video gaming.
Let’s get into what we know on this new device and how you can secure some nostalgic gaming for yourself.
Atari 2600+ Details
The Atari 2600+ takes inspiration specifically from the CX2600-A model, first introduced in 1980, replicating its design at an 80% scale.
This definitely pays homage to its legacy while adapting to more modern aesthetics and technology requirements.
Each Atari 2600+ console comes equipped with a new CX40+ joystick, a 1:1 version of the original controller, maintaining the iconic design while offering improved functionality for precise gameplay.
The package also includes a special 10-in-1 game cartridge featuring beloved titles like Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, Realsports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball, and Yars’ Revenge.
The way this cartridge works is by choosing your preferred game through the old-school DIP switches on the cartridge.
This provides an authentic and nostalgic gaming experience without the need for the more modern on-screen menus.
For those looking to expand their 2600+ library further, a separate 4-in-1 cartridge is available, which includes classic games like Breakout, Canyon Bomber, Night Driver, and Video Olympics.
This package also provides a pair of circular CX-30 paddle controllers required for these games, allowing for two-player action.
In a surprising but welcomed move, the Atari 2600+ is compatible with most original VCS/2600 game cartridges from the 1970s and ‘80s, as well as cartridges released for the Atari 7800 in 1986.
This backward compatibility therefore allows you to revisit any of your favorite classic games, provided you have the original cartridges in fully working order that is.
If you want to get your hands on this new ‘classic’ console, the launch is scheduled for November 17, 2023, arriving just in time for the holiday season.
However, it is available for pre-order now exclusively on Amazon, coming in at €119.99/£99.99 for the package.
