Sonic Heroes Unreal Engine Remake Rumoured For 2025

A new report suggests that SEGA is planning a Sonic Heroes remake in Unreal Engine with a proposed launch of 2025.

Zippo, a long-time source of industry news and rumours, revealed in a blog post yesterday that Sonic Team will transition away from Hedgehog Engine 2 and that a ‘full on, Unreal Engine 5 powered remake of a big, important, seminal 3D Sonic game has entered production at Sonic Team recently’.

Brazil’s Universo Nintendo ran with the story before author Felipe Lima took to Twitter to suggest Sonic Heroes as the mystery title teased by Zippo.

Known SEGA and Atlus leaker Midori (aka MbKKssTBhz5) was once again on hand to corroborate the rumour of a Sonic Heroes remake and backed up Lima’s suggestion on Twitter by saying ‘this is correct information’.

Midori, who correctly prophesied yesterday’s Sonic Toys Party game leak back in January, also clarified that a Sonic Adventure remake was not on the cards right now.

SEGA are currently developing several titles for modern platforms with new entries for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and Golden Axe revealed during The Game Awards in December.

A Heroic Return

Sonic Heroes PS2 game case

Sonic Heroes launched in 2003 for GameCube PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC and saw teams of three Sonic characters joining together to foil Doctor Eggman’s plans of world domination.

While a colourful and vibrant Sonic game, Sonic Heroes failed to live up to the legacy of the Blue Blur’s 2D outings upon release, largely due to the wonky controls that would often see Sonic and chums plummeting to their doom following the slightest press of the analogue sticks.

It doesn’t seem like a day goes by at the moment without a new Sonic leak. Yesterday the trailer for Sonic Toys Party, the long rumoured ‘Sonic Fall Guys’ game, hit the web, and another source suggests that a Sonic flavoured menu is heading to IHOP in the USA.

I’ll temper my excitement until SEGA officially unveil a remake of Sonic Heroes, but the prospect of a do-over for one of Sonic’s most promising titles remains an exciting prospect for fans of the speedy hedgehog.
