Destroying the Bydo Empire never looked so good, and that's a fact. How many of you have played R-Type on an old cartridge or down at the arcade? How many of you have played R-Type DX on Switch, but thought it would be better playing it on your Game Boy or ModRetro Chromatic? Well, your dreams have been answered, because R-Type DX is back on a plasma purple cartridge with 5 versions of the game to play.
5 games, 1 cartridge, nearly packaged inside a hard cover box and complete with a colour manual. It's like Retro-Bit have brought the good days back to us in a neat little package, and I couldn't be happier about it. To be fair, the good days are already here as ModRetro just announced two new Chromatic games to add to their ever growing catalogue of games you can play on your Chromatic or original Game Boy - there's never been a better time to be a Game Boy fan than right now!
Retro-Bit's new release brings R-Type and R-Type II to your Game Boy and Game Boy Color, complete with classic and color-enhanced versions, as well as R-Type DX Mode which brings both games into one for super-slick continuous playthrough.
If you've not played R-Type before, then where have you been? We're talking intergalactic battles of the best kind, arcade action with a single pilot taking on massive bosses and waves of enemy fighters. It's the kind of game you sit down to play for 5 minutes and realise two-hours-later that you've missed important meetings or picking up the kids from football practice. And if you spent your youth playing this in the arcade, you can relive all the action from the comfort of your sofa without having to queue in line or carry around a pocket full of change just to play it.

There are a bunch of places where you can pick this up from whether you live in the US or Europe. There's also a limited edition run from Limited Run Games where you'll get a cosmic black cartridge instead of plasma, but the game will probably turn up in 2029. Still, I'm pleased that R-Type is getting a new lease of life, and when the game ships in 2027, I'm going to be putting in a serious shift completing this game all over again for the umpteenth time!
