I never thought I would see the day when I could just open up a website and play Mario Kart 64, but here we are. I certainly didn't think that I would be able to play a game that I used to play on the N64 inside a Tweet either, but again, my retro brain is having to believe my eyes as I stand at my desk playing Mario Kart in Safari without having to download anything,
Mario Kart 64, in my browser, with both online multiplayer and private rooms that I can play with select friends. It's the stuff that dreams are made of, especially when I can use my keyboard to work the game. The controls are so simple that I can race and fire with X and Z and control with the arrow keys - that's all you need.
The port comes to us from Oliver Sauter and allows you to play whenever, wherever (please don't sing Shakira in your head now). You can race against other players in real time, with new races every 30 seconds. It's instant browser access too - there's no account registration or installation. The browser version of the game is built using SpaghettiKart alongside libultraship and WebAssembly Technology.
You can pick your racer, your chosen track, change your name, have your camera on, and much more. If there aren't enough racers, you'll just play against bots instead, but I've played a few games now with a healthy mixture of both. If you don't pick a character, it will just assign you one.
I've tried playing on my Mac and on my iPhone, and it worked perfectly both times. Playing on the iPhone brought up a joystick and four buttons for drift, gas, brake, and item firing. This is a great port, and I will be sticking the webpage on my iPhone home screen as a shortcut. The last time I did that was about 6 years ago for a recipe for honey pork and chilli broccoli, so I only do it when I'm seriously impressed by something.
Head to the website to try it out for yourself!
