The problem with not speaking Japanese is that there are a whole bunch of amazing games for all of my favourite consoles that I've never been able to play. Sometimes, Japanese games get released in PAL and NTSC territories, but other times, they don't receive translations and never get into the hands of Western gamers.
Luckily, dedicated individuals are putting their spare time to great use and making translations, just like we had recently with Sailor Moon. And thanks to ROM hacker nyuutsu and their work over the past couple of years, we've now got english translations of all three versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4: Battle of Great Duelist for the Game Boy Color.
The ROM hack provides 'a full English translation of each of the three versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4: Battle of Great Duelist' and is designed to be paired with a companion website that includes a save editor.
The main thing about this work is that nyuutsu has tried their very best to preserve the context and feel of the original game, keeping Japanese games instead of changing them to Western equivalents, and taking time to ensure speech patterns are kept the same instead of rearranging sentences into how Westerners might say them. It gives the game the feel it was intended while allowing all English speaking gamers to discover the games for the first time.
To use the ROM hack, you'll need legally acquired ROMs of the three versions of the game - the Jounouchi Deck, the Kaiba Deck, and the Yuugi Deck. There's even an option to remove the banned and limited cards lists too! Head to the project page for more information!
