Work On Decompiling Super Smash Bros. Brawl Is Underway

Our copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl

For a while now, I've been putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) to talk to you about decomp projects from the N64, the PS1, and the Dreamcast. In essence, most of the projects I've covered have been from the fifth and sixth generations of consoles, the games we grew up with in the 90s and early 00s that stopped us from revising when or playing outside. We're talking Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64, Pilotwings 64... in all honesty, it's been a lot of Nintendo titles so far.

And you know what, for very good reason. Everyone knows how much of a Nintendo boy I am, and their exclusives like The Legend of Zelda and the Mario Kart games are some of the best games around. And another series that non-Ninty owners understandably want on their consoles and PCs is the energetic and often downright insane Super Smash Bros.

As of this moment, the original Super Smash Bros. game for the N64 has been decompiled 96.62%. Super Smash Bros. Melee has been decompiled 64.46%. I would have thought that we might have got one game sorted first before working on the others, but as the whole process takes a while, I can kind of understand why we now have Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii sitting at a grand old total of 1.09% decompiled.

This is the first Wii decompilation project I've covered here on the site, though it makes me slightly worried. The closer we get to consoles like the Wii and the Wii U, the more likely Nintendo are to come sniffing with their lawyers in tow. Decompilation is still in a legal grey area for the time being as it's not technically emulation but requires a legally acquired ROM to get the game up and running. How many people actually legally acquire their ROMs is another matter, however, although with the arrival of the Polymega Remix, that might all be about to change.

It's going to be a while before I report on this one again - don't worry, I won't be telling you when it hits 2%, 3% and so on. Still, it's exciting knowing that it's happening, and I'll report back when the original N64 brawler is finished!
