Now you're playing with power, super power! If you've ever emulated SNES games before, then you're sure to know all about ZSNES. I'm sorry to tell you that it released back in 1997, which means we're slowly coming up to it being 29 years old. And while ZNES was pretty pioneering for the 90s, things have moved on a little bit since then.
Enter SUPER ZNES, created by two of the original four devs who worked on the emulator back in the day, Demo and zsKnight. They've come back to their creation, rewritten it from the ground up, and created a GPU-powered emulator dedicated to the SNES for the modern era.
SUPER ZNES is going to have far more accurate CPU and Audio cores than the original emulator. It will have a GPU-powered physical processing unit core which will enable users to access hi-res Mode 7 and game-specific upgrades/enhancements.
And here's the best bit: Demo and zsKnight are working on the Super Enhancement Engine, where they enhance popular SNES games. It creates hi-res gameplay through an internal drawing program. It's not just upscaling what's there, but making sure that everything is sharp via manual redrawing. They're also adding extra features into the backgrounds of games too to give them more detail. Widescreen, overclocking, and 3D height mapped date are also being implemented for some games too.
Other quality of life features will include fast forward and rewind, auto save, bookmarks, quick load, and of course, save states, one of the things ZNES was heralded for back in the 90s.
Demo and zsKnight have done this the proper way too - there is no vibe coding (using AI) to be found in SUPER ZNES whatsoever. To be fair, two devs of their calibre shouldn't need to use AI anyway; they're old-school.
The team are working to bring special chip emulation and other enhancements including Netplay to the table soon. There are a couple of bugs still, but you can download SUPER ZNES for Windows, Mac, and Android right now, with iOS coming shortly.
