Have you ever played on a Sega Model 3 in the arcade? That might be niche knowledge, but maybe you've played Star Wars Trilogy down at the arcade with your friends back in the 90s? Sadly, there aren't as many arcades around these days, let alone Sega cabinets... unless they crop up on farms in England.
A dev called ToastedGreedo (amazing Star Wars reference), has been working to bring the arcade trilogy to the Dreamcast, giving us the chance to enjoy rail-shooter action in our living rooms on real hardware. And yes, there's going to be a demo disc coming very soon!
Like many things in the retro gaming scene, this started just as a 'let's see if this is possible ' kind of thing. And according to Dreamcast Junkyard, there was actually a port of this game rumoured to be coming to the Dreamcast back in the day. Once again, the Retro Gaming community has corrected the course of history - it's one of the reasons I love this job so much, getting to write about projects brought back by fans like the Dinosaur Planet release before Fox McCloud was brought into the game.
There are two stages running on the Dreamcast so far - the Yavin Death Star Stage and the Boba Fett Duel, both of which will be releasing on the free Dreamcast. compatible demo disc. You can check them out below!
Speaking in the description on the YouTube video, ToastedGreedo says:
The Boba Fett Duel was the first stage I recreated for the project and has served as the foundation for bringing the original Model 3 arcade experience to Dreamcast hardware. It's been especially exciting to see the project progress from an early technical experiment into something that increasingly feels like a complete Dreamcast game.
As I've mentioned a couple of times now, this is a free project that ToastedGreedo isn't making any money from, a project that is simply for the Dreamcast community and giving something back to retro gaming fans who should have had this port back in the day. I'm hoping that the whole game will be finished at some point soon, and I'll be keeping an eye on ToastedGreedo's YouTube for more information over the coming months!
