Dust of your sneakers people, because a Sonic The Hedgehog Lego set is heading to a toy store near you!
Ever since the Lego NES set dropped into our lives, the Retro Dodo team has continually craved more block-building adventures. From the NES to the official Super Mario Lego sets that our partners tell us we play with WAY too much, Lego has well and truly joined the ranks of retro gaming brilliance.
But the fun doesn’t lie solely with Nintendo products and characters, at least not anymore.
Everyone’s favourite supersonic, sneaker-wearing hedgehog is joining the Lego gaming ranks in a brand new set announced by the company.
Here’s everything we know about the most famous member of the Erinaceinae family to have ever zoomed across the Earth. (I totally looked that last part up… ).

Sonic The Hedgehog Lego Set Is Finally Happening!
Legs fans undoubtedly know all about the Lego Ideas page. It’s a place where budding Lego creators post their ideas and self-made projects. The idea is to garner enough traction from voters to get pieces in front of Lego HQ and hopefully put them into production.
We’ve seen a lot of amazing fan-made ideas over the years, from the Lego Gameboy to this Lego Zelda set. Still, none have actually come to fruition…
… until now.
Back in 2019, a Lego genius named Viv Grannel put together an idea for a Sonic the Hedgehog Lego set. Based on the legendary Sonic Mania Green Hill Zone, the set included key characters, enemies, and features from this amazing level. It looked incredible, but in the Lego business, that’s just not enough.
After uploading images and information about the design, votes and support flooded in. It takes 10,000 votes for Lego to sit up and take notice, and that’s exactly what they did. Viv Grannel received the votes needed for Lego to consider her proposal, and now 2 years later, the kit is going into production!
What’s In The Sonic the Hedgehog Lego Set?
Viv Grannel certainly knows her stuff when it comes to recreating the vibe of the legendary speedster in miniature form.
In a recent press release, Grannel tells us “I’ve been invested in the world of Sonic for almost my entire life. It’s such a perfect fit for the LEGO system that I spent about a year rallying support for it to happen. Having 10,000 people back my design was overwhelming enough, even with friends and family behind me. Having it be selected for further development was the most exciting secret I have ever had to keep!”
The kit includes a miniature Sonic, animals to rescue, boiled heavies, rings, a Phantom Ruby, and Dr. Eggman himself. Sonic comes with a plane and Eggman pilots the mighty Egg Robot Mech. It all looks so stunning!
The stage itself features the famous bounce pads and secrets hidden around every corner. Palm trees, water, flowers; it’s all here in this 700-piece kit.
Unlike the Mario figurine with moving visuals, Sonic looks like a good-old-fashioned Lego piece. This makes us love it even more!
What a dream come true; no wonder Viv was excited, we can’t wait to get our hands on this!
News From Sega
SEGA Europe Ltd’s Director of Brand Licensing Jason Rice says, “At SEGA, we’ve always encouraged fans to take part in the legacy of the Sonic franchise through their own creations and it’s wonderful to see the tradition continued through the LEGO Ideas program.”
They’re as thrilled to be partnering with Viv and the LEGO Group as we are for it to happen. It’s because of retro gaming fans like Viv that sets like this come to life. Hopefully, old SEGA fans and new gamers can use kits like this to keep Sonic alive for many years to come.
What Is The Sonic The Hedgehog Lego Set Release Date?
As of yet, there is no official release date for the Lego set. Still, we know for a FACT that it’s coming.
Sonic’s birthday is coming up soon, so it would be a good idea to launch it at the same time to help celebrate the little guys big day.
As always, we’ll keep you posted with any new developments as and when we get them. Now, what can we throw out to make room for this beast when it arrives..?
A huge thank you to Viv Grannel for making this set a reality. We salute you!
