A history book defining the first 30 years of the PlayStation sounds like a good idea, but I've got a feeling it's just going to make us more nostalgic than ever for physical media in a time when Sony are pushing everything they've got at going fully digital. Yet despite Sony not being in everyone's good books at the minute, the deluxe edition of their new book has already sold out, with pre-orders for the standard edition still open.

So what is this new release all about? Well, according to the official blurb on UK-based bookstore Read-Only Memory's site, the only place you can buy the new book from, this 4oo page dive down memory lane will give you access to never-before-seen consoles and controllers as well as experimental mockups for consoles that have never made it outside of Sony's inner sanctum.
PlayStation: The First 30 Years is the definitive visual chronicle of Sony’s world-changing videogame console, marking its 30th anniversary with unprecedented access to the company’s archive of R&D prototypes, concept sketches, and development models.

You'll hear from the engineers and designers who helped to put the PlayStation on the map back in the 90s, all in a hardback book that celebrates the glory years of the brand and the console that defined our childhoods. All of the visuals in the book have been photographed by Benedict Redgrove, a photographer known for creating amazing images in the 2019 publication NASA: Past and Present Dreams of the Future.

The Deluxe Edition of the book, which comes with exposed binding, a foil-stamped clamshell presentation box, 5 colour neon ink box lining, and a365 x 285 mm photographic print signed by Teiyu Goto and Benedict Redgrove, has already sold out. It was priced at £245 ($325) and limited to 1,994 copies.

The standard edition, which comes with an embossed + debossed case design, foil typography detailing, and 4 ribbon bookmarks in the colours of the PlayStation button symbols, costs £95 ($125) and is still available to pre-order. Both editions will be shipping this November!
