If you love Ocarina of Time as much as I do (which should be all of you, let's face it), then you'll be all over this project. A developer called Reonu is working to remake all of the prerenders in the original N64 version of Ocarina of Time, changing them from 2D to 3D. Reonu is trying to match the style of the N64 classic instead of the 3DS version, and has been working on this mammoth task for over a year.
Essentially, it means that places like Castle Town are fully explorable; you don't just see a 2D image of a place that needs to load before you arrive there. It makes OOT feel like a more modern Zelda title while still retaining the charm of the original, and I'm all for it. (Thanks, ReCollect64!) The original pre-renders have been accurately remade as N64 graphics, and you can toggle between the normal camera and a free camera with the L-button on your controller - yes, the video below was taken using an actual N64!
The name of the project is OOT unJPEG, which, while not the catchiest name for the project, does what it says on the tin. As you can see from the Bluesky post below, Reonu is working using Blender and Fast64, and the project will be available as a ROM hack that you'll be able to use on your actual N64 and as a mod for Zelda 64 recompiled. And the best part is that no generative AI has been used for this product, which is nice to see considering the influx of AI in the space at the moment.
I'm recreating all the prerenders using Blender and Fast64. For the market I combined all of it into a single scene, which eliminates all the load screens and makes it seamless. Making this work on N64 hardware with ok performance was very hard and required me to write custom CPU culling code.

The N64 version of the game has level-of-detail models for all of the buildings in the market that make it look so much better. These won't be there in the recomp version, but I reckon that most of you will be getting this to put on a Summercart64 or EverDrive anyway.
Reonu hasn't given a date that the project will be ready yet, and they're also open to working with 2D texture artists to bring the project to life too. If you can help out and allow me... I mean the Retro Gaming community to play this game quicker, then contact Reonu on Bluesky!
