Getting To Grips With Digimon Survive!

Digimon Survive - The characters from the school outing

What Is Digimon Survive?

Digimon Survive is a new Digimon game created by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Fans of the series will see Agumon, Beelzelmon, and Terriermon return in a brand new strategy RPG adventure where surviving is the aim of the game.

This new title promises to be the most action packed and difficult title of all of the best Digimon games. We’re very much looking forward to getting our hands on it for a play very soon!

Hold up; some of our new readers might not even know what Digimon are!

You know when there’s a glitch in your internet connection or a weird growling down your telephone line? It’s not a technical fault; it’s the sound of Digimon from the Digital Realm!

Inhabiting a parallel universe created as a by product of our communications systems here on earth, Digimon are digital monsters that Digivolve into ginormous beasts.

Of course, that’s the true nerd answer to what Digimon are. The actual fact is that they started life as virtual pets in the craze for collecting 90s toys. Since then, the franchise has grown, encapsulating a TV series, card trading game, and lots of other collectables.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, and it’s TOTALLY different to Pokemon. Wargreymon could eat Pikachu for breakfast.

Yes, you battle with small monsters and yes it technically sounds exactly the same, but it’s not. Got it!

What Happens In Digimon Survive?

Bandai have promised Digi-maniacs that Digimon Survive will be the darkest game in the series yet.

That doesn’t mean that we’re going to be seeing Dark Souls-style demon summonings or brutal finishing moves like in Mortal Kombat.

It does mean, however, that the content will be a little spookier and the emphasis on surviving rather than adventuring should have gamers on the edge of their seats.

Wrong choices may lead to characters dying, and there are multiple routes that can have detrimental affects to your adventures.

The game starts off with a school trip visit to a famous temple after an earthquake. Characters Takuma Momozuka, Minoru Hyuuga, and Aoi Shibuya discover Koromon as they scout through the woods, one of the lower evolution forms of Agumon (dino dude on the left of the featured image).

Koromon is kicking back and relaxing in the shadows of some trees when the party hear screams from the rest of their class. To their horror, they find that they are being attacked by feral Digimon.

Spurred into action, little Koromon evolves into Agumon to try and fight off the maddened Digimon that have appeared, but to no avail. The group soon realise that they have wandered into a completely different world where nothing is as it seems.

Spooky stuff; I got chills writing that!

Will There Be Any New Digimon?

As far as we know, there haven’t been any new Digimon announced for Digimon Survive. Still, there is hope that we may see some new characters in the game once it comes out.

Many of the previous Digimon games have been updated with an extra 300 digital monsters, so this could be a little nest egg for gamers to discover once they get into the adventure.

How Do I Play Digimon Survive?

Digimon Survive is a strategy RPG where every choice that you make may affect your chances of survival.

It features four main modes of play that you will encounter as you make your way through the story, with different paths affecting everything from the monsters you will face to the digivolutions that your little companions will go through.

Gameplay Types

Understanding RPGs is a daunting task in itself, but this new Digimon game can easily be separated into four main segments.

  • Drama Parts – Soak up text and character dialogue on the screen in order to tell the story of this epic adventure.
  • Search Actions – This part requires you to search for any means of surviving, which admittedly sounds pretty dark to us!
  • Free Action – The player can walk, garner information from characters, pick a path, and generally take a break from having to consider your characters mortality.
  • Free Battle – The part that many fans of the series will be longing for. Fight with Digimon, collect items, and prove that your Digimon are the champions!

As I mentioned above, wrong choices may lead to one of your characters actually dying, something that doesn’t usually happen in ‘cutesy’ manga games like Pokemon and Digimon.

This harrowing feature makes us think that Digimon Survive is aimed at older audiences, the ones who first fell in love with Digimon back in the 90s.

How Many Digimon Games Are There?

The first and newest Digimon games side by side

There are 45 Digimon games in total, including racing, battling, and story games.

21 of the 45 Digimon games are RPG titles, with Digimon Survive being the latest in the stand-alone in series not to sit within the Digimon World series.

The last stand-alone RPG, Digimon Adventure, came out in 2013, so Digimon Survive is long overdue!

When Will Digimon Survive Be Released?

This is a question that many fans have been asking since 2019, and one that still hasn’t been answered.

Bandai’s new Digimon strategy survival game was supposed to drop in 2019 after being announced for all major consoles back in 2018.

2019 soon became 2020, however, and then Covid-19 turned up and ruined everything, pushing back release dates left, right, and centre.

All of our readers will know what happened next, of course.

Understandably, Digimon fans across the globe remain sceptical as to whether this game will ever be released. 2021 looks like the earliest gamers will get their hands on Digimon Survive, with news supposedly dropping around Springtime.

What Consoles Will Digimon Survive Be Released For?

Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One PS5, PS4, and Windows systems will see releases of the new Digimon game.

Digimon Survive may even see a Nintendo Switch 2 release. Watch this space, and check back here for more news as and when we get it!
