Some of you may be asking yourselves “What are Retroachievements?” and Retro Dodo is here to answer that question!
Surely the name tells you a lot: Retro – achievements. But let’s break that down a little…
Retroachievements are a system of video game goals (ie “achievements”) that you can tackle by playing some of your favorite games in RetroArch.
So, without further ado, let’s crack on and find out what all of the fuss is about. Be warned; your RetroArch gaming exploits might never be the same again!
Introducing RetroArch
Surely by now you’ve heard a lot about RetroArch. It’s taken the number one spot on a ton of our best emulators lists – 10 Best Emulators For PC, 5 Best Emulators For Linux, and several others.
RetroArch is our personal favorite all-in-one emulation suite, and it is also the primary emulation software that is on most of the 37 Best Retro Handhelds Of 2022.
Still, RetroArch is not the only emulator that features Retroachievements. Users of RALibRetro, PCSX2 and a few other lesser known ones include it too.
But obviously, RetroArch is the one most people are using and that is where most will benefit from Retroachievements, so that’s the emulator we will be talking a lot about in this article as well.
Getting Started With Retroachievements
If you’d like to start exploring Retroachievements, you first need to setup your own account.
You can create your own username and password through Retroachievements.org on their Create Account page.
And the next thing to do is to activate Retroachievements within RetroArch.
Within the RetroArch app, you wanna go to your main Settings tab and find the Achievements option.
From there, just enter your username and password from your newly created account, and you’ll be ready to go!

Start Achieving!
The next logical step would be to start exploring the Achievements available to you.
Retroachievements offers a ton of challenges and trophies for many of your favorite retro games.
So if you enjoy goal oriented gaming, online leaderboards, and collecting a bunch of trackable achievements, this is gonna’ be perfect.
The list of possible achievements is absolutely massive.
They cover a huge list of retro consoles, including Game Boy, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation, Playstation 2, PSP, Atari 2600, Arcade, and many more.
And of course, there’s a massive community of gamers on the Retroachievements website creating their own unique achievements, hosting competitions, and talking a little bit of smack.
