Tetris Forever was always going to be an exciting purchase for Tetris fans, but now that it's shipping with a dedicated Tetris Handheld for collectors to snap up, it's become a must-have item that we all need in our lives. Looking like a cross between the Game Boy Pocket and the ModRetro Chromatic, it comes with two Tetris games pre-installed and a branded stand to show it off in your office or games room.
If you're a fan of the Retro Dodo Podcast, then you will know all about Chris Kohler, the Editorial Director of Digital Eclipse, and his mission to preserve gaming history for newer generations of gamers. Back in 2023, he brought the concept of the Gold Master Series to the world, a series of interactive documentaries that in his own words 'celebrate key designers, studios, and games that changed the world'. Tetris Forever is part of that series and takes you on an immersive journey into the history of the game as well as playing famous iterations of it from over the years!
The handheld is understandably the star of the show in our eyes and takes us back to the days of the DMG coming with Tetris in the box. It's super sleek and the Tetrimino branding on the bottom makes a super-nerd like me incredibly happy.
Putting the handheld aside, however, everything else about the Gold Master Series is a collectible too, from the modular box that lets you build your favourite Tetrimino shape when being displayed to the woven patches that come as part of the package. You'll also get a poster, the soundtrack to Tetris Time Warp on CD, magnets, and the game itself.
Copies of this Collectors Edition are available from Limited Run Games (NA) and Clear River Games (EU) from February 25th. I can't wait to get hold of that handheld and to display it proudly with all of my other Game Boys in my games room - Tetris Forever!
While this might be the most stylish dedicated Tetris handheld that we've seen over the years, it certainly isn't the first. Remember the McNugget that played Tetris, or the 7-Eleven slushy cup? I'll admit that they were undoubtedly more gimmicky than this new handheld which looks like something I need in my life, but if you have made it your life mission to collect Tetris handhelds of all shapes and sizes, then you really can't afford to let this one slip through your fingers!
