Sonic and the Secret Rings was boring; there's no getting around it. It lacked anything that made a Sonic game fun, any sense of character. It was just a bit 'meh', and what could have been one of the best games on the Wii ended up just being a run-of-the-mill title.
Thankfully, Sonic fans have done what Sega and Nintendo didn't and created the game we should have had back in 2007. It's been almost 20 years since the game released, and now we have an unofficial fan-made port, Sonic Project Reignition that has, against all the odds, made the game fun and exciting to play again.
So how has this happened? Well, Sonic Project Reignition has been uploaded by a dev called KumaPauZ, the Lead Developer on the project. They and their team have kept the original story of the game but upgraded it with a whole host of new features like new music, skills, support for mods, and Time Attack modes. The game is available to play on Mac, Linux, PC, and Steam Deck, with support for both controllers and keyboards depending on how you like to play. The visuals have also been upgraded too to bring it kicking and screaming into this decade.
Plus, there's also party mode with online multiplayer - if you were on the edge about trying it out, that's probably tipped you over.
How To Download Sonic Project Reignition
Windows users:
- Download the version for Windows and extract the .zip file.
- Open the extracted folder, and run Project Reignition.exe by clicking the file.
Linux users:
- Download the Linux version, and then extract the .zip file.
- Open the extracted folder and run Project Reignition.x86_64 by clicking on the file, then you can start playing!
Steam Deck users:
- Download the Linux version and send it to your Steam Deck via Desktop Mode (You can use a program like KDE Connect to do this).
- Extract the .zip folder via Dolphin (Steam's internal file manager).
- Open the extracted folder, right-click on "Project Reignition.x86_64," select "Properties -> Permissions," and enable "Allow executing file as program."
- Right-Click "Project Reignition.x86_64" and select "Add to Steam."
- Return to Gaming Mode and find Project Reignition.x86_64 in your game library, then press "Play."
Note - If you are unable to run the Linux version for whatever reason, you can try running the Windows version instead using Proton. Do NOT run the game in Desktop Mode; otherwise, your controls won't be recognized properly by Steam.
Mac users:
- Download the Mac version and try to run it (an error should pop up).
- Go into System Settings -> Privacy and Security, and where it says "[game file] was blocked for [whatever reason]", click "run anyway" (It'll seem like nothing happened).
- Open a terminal in the folder the .app file is located in and run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Sonic\ and\ the\ Secret\ Rings\ Remake.app - Run
codesign -s - --force --deep Sonic\ and\ the\ Secret\ Rings\ Remake.app(May take a minute to complete) - Open the game (May take a bit to finish).
