This is one I have been waiting for for a long while now. An emulator frontend made by an individual developer known as depmosts, which kinda came out of nowhere a few months ago. And I know what you're thinking, "not another frontend!". This one is different, trust me.
This app organises your ROM files in a manner that prioritises cartridge and disc art, making it feel like your very own cluttered collection at home, and it even features cool animations that look like the game is being inserted into your retro handheld when you press play.
The UI has a very playful, pixelated look to it, which has obviously been created by someone who has good taste in software design. It very much takes inspiration from the GBA and Nintendo Wii when it comes to menus, and I have luckily been playing around with this brand new Alpha all day today.
Socket 0.0.1 is now available to download exclusively for Patreons who support Depmots work. You can join his Patreon here for around $6.50 a month, which gives you access to the .apk file alongside frequent updates of the application. No doubt it's taken a lot of work, so any support goes straight to the developer. It will eventually be free when it's out of Beta, so for those not wanting to cough up, you just have to wait a little longer.
Depmots has stated, "This version is an alpha, so there might be lots of bugs. I wanted to release the launcher now to get it in people's hands and get a ton of feedback to really improve the UX and fix bugs in the coming weeks". And yes, I can confirm i've spotted some bugs, but that said, this is a really polished first release and it's a remarkable little frontend that I'll undoubtedly be using on my favourite Android retro handhelds.
It's very simple to use, you simply "add a platform", sync it up to your ROM file folder for that specific platform/console, and Socket will do the rest by crawling them, automatically adding cartridge/disc art, and even syncs it to your emulator app, so with a press of a button, it will open up the correct app. It's incredibly easy to use, and makes RetroArch feel like an overcomplicated, boring mess.

There's still lots to be done, such as searching, more organisation methods for larger ROM libraries, new consoles (where's GBC!), maybe a choice of new animations, etc., but this is a great start, and I think this is going to be a very popular frontend emulator for those obsessed with cartridge and discart. Again, you can support Depmots on Patreon for $6.50 to get access to this very early Alpha!
