Eagle-eyed data-miners may have discovered that Shadow the Hedgehog is coming to Sonic Superstars in the near future.

Twitter user and self-proclaimed ‘Hedgehog Enthusiast’ Axanery, made the discovery following the recent update to Sonic Superstars that added Sonic’s Holiday Costume as free DLC to the game.

Axanery found multiple lines of code in the new update that references Shadow as a DLC character. Axanery also unearthed mentions of a ‘Retro Diner Style Amy’. The ‘Retro Diner Style’ is also known as ‘IHOP AMY’ internally at SEGA. This is a reference to the chain of American pancake restaurants that I really shouldn’t be thinking about before having lunch!

Axanery is no stranger to Hedgehog hi-jinks and is currently working on Sonic CDX, a remake of Sonic CD alongside a small team of developers, artists and musicians.

The popularity of Sonic’s rival is unquestionable and Shadow Coming To Sonic Superstars would just be the latest in his recent appearances. The black ‘hog will appear in the upcoming Sonic 3 movie and has recently received his own LEGO set.

There’s No Relationship

Sonic Superstars

Sadly, comments made by the Sonic Team Boss indicate that the Shadow coming to Sonic Superstars isn’t the real deal and could in fact by Sonic in a Shadow-inspired onesie.

Speaking to Game Informer back in August, Takashi Iizuka confirmed why Shadow won’t appear in Sonic Superstars. Iizuka gave a logical, canonical reason why the two hedgehogs couldn’t share the same ‘Classic’ space together by saying “Shadow is from the Modern series of characters and gameplay that we have introduced. The Classic series exists before the Modern series, so they haven’t met at that time. There’s no relationship, so we won’t be bringing Shadow into the Classic series.”

That seems like a definitive reason why Shadow coming to Sonic Superstars can’t happen then.

Sonic Superstars launched in October this year and I awarded it a solid 7/10 in my review after praising the excellent controls, beautiful graphics and toe-tapping soundtrack.
