It's almost Halloween, which means you should all be playing spooky ROM hacks and eating candy until November 1st. Pokémon Specter has a new playable demo that you can download to check out, and it focuses on some paranormal activity (though it won't be half as scary as the film, don't worry!).

The premise is simple - players take a trainer who has woken up in a strange canyon in the Ygelle region. They're suffering from amnesia (it's always the way), and you discover that there's a serious Ghost problem in the region. We're talking literal gangs of ghosts ruling the roost, so much so that budding Pokémon trainers aren't actually going out on adventures anymore.

Weirdly, a ghost seems to latch onto you and doesn't want to leave. You feel like there's a deep connection, and they join you as you challenge the leaders of gyms and fight the rest of the ghosts around the region, coming head-to-head with other gangs who are trying to sort the specter problem out in their own unique style.

There's a diverging path system in this game, and at some point you'll have to decide which path you want to go down and which group of ghost hunters you're going to join. As the story unfolds, it will help you decide which path you want to go down, especially as the identity of your ghost companion becomes apparent. A Pokémon game with a relationship system and diverging paths; what does it think it is, Fable?

As I alluded to in the title, there's more of a strategic feel to the gameplay in Pokémon Specter. You won't be relying on Pokémon Types like electric beats water or fire beats grass anymore; you'll have to figure out what strategies the gym leaders are using. There's a special reward in it for you when you manage to complete each gym too.

With new sidequests, changes to move sets and evolution levels, as well as a spooky feel for the spooky season, I think you owe it to yourself to check out Pokémon Specter asap. Cancel everything and do it right now... if you dare!
