You guys know I love a demake, especially when it involves the Game Boy DMG. Some of my fondest memories are from playing games like Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins and Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, and I always wondered if I would be able to make my own courses for Mazza to jump through one day.

Ok, I could have got into game programming instead of article writing and that would have been a whole lot easier, but with the likes of the original Super Mario Maker, I can make my own levels and make them as hard or as easy as I want. I spent hours on that game, messing around creating levels that would have made the toughest speedrunners cry and ultimately never being able to do them myself, but I had fun in the process.
I've been checking out Super Mario Maker GB by NintenFanBoy, who obviously loves Nintendo as much as I do. His demake of Super Mario Maker for the Game Boy allows you to make simple levels in your browser no matter where you are, or on an emulator like Delta or Afterplay too. I've been messing around with it on Delta and, while it is very simple, it's a cool little piece to make small levels and test out ideas.

The controls are simple - select a piece, place it down, and press start to head back to the piece selection screen. You can choose whether to create or play, with options to save and share your creations with other people too.
I haven't spent hours on this, but it's the kind of thing I would pick up while waiting a meal to cook or on the bus. It's fun, and it's free to play - what more could I want?

There are versions for both Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, depending on which nostalgic game you resonate with the most. Head to Itch.io for more info and to check them out for yourself!
