How Many Digimon Are There?
In total, there are 1,450 Digimon in the world as of 19th October 2022.
To clarify, that’s the digital world and not running around Leeds, Tokyo, or Marseille.
Can you believe it; 1,400 Digimon. I wonder how many you can name? Though, I guess learning all the names of each digital monster is a good way to pass the time until Digimon Survive finally comes out…
Now, here’s something that might surprise you. There are more digital monsters out there than there are Pokemon.
Just let that sink in for a little bit.
Still with me? Good. There are are currently 905 Pokemon (as of May 2022), which means Agumon and crew outnumber them by almost 500.

When Did the First Digimon Game Come Out?
The first Digimon game to drop back in Japan in 1998 was Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers on the Sega Saturn.
At the time of writing, that game came out 24 years ago. That’s 1,400 digital monsters over the space of 24 years… I wonder where they’ve been hiding all this time!
One of the main selling points when new Digimon games dropped was always ‘featuring 300 new characters’ etc, with the monsters themselves helping to sell the titles and keep the series alive rather than necessarily featuring compelling storylines.
It’s also why our list of the best Digimon ROM hacks features some awesome fan-made titles based around the critters themselves too.

Who Is The Best Digimon?
With 1,400 Digital critters to choose from, I guess choosing the best is like asking me how long a piece of string is. Still, there are some common agreements as to who wins out in different categories.
The strongest character in the whole bunch is undoubtedly Gaiamon. Ok, so that’s technically a cheat answer as Gaiamon means every digital creature fused together. ZeedMillenniummon is a close second, and being second to the most powerful being in the universe isn’t that bad.
The most famous Digital monster is obviously Agumon. He crops up everywhere and is one of the main poster-mon for the franchise, like Pika is for the Pokemon franchise.
Mercurymon is the fastest character in the series. Technically, Mercurymon is a god, so that’s pretty understandable if you think about it. Bet it doesn’t shut up about being the best though.
So there you have it, that’s 3 of the 1,400 Digimon out there. Now it’s your turn to go out and find the other 1,397. Game on!
