We've loved the GB Operator and used it regularly over the years. That's especially so since Epilogue released their mobile app that allows you to check whether cartridges are counterfeit or not, as well as backing up save states and allowing you to play cartridges straight on your PC. And now, Epilogue have restocked this little nifty device back on their website.
The GB Operator has lots of other cool features too, like allowing you to write your own GB Studio games onto cartridges and using a Game Boy Camera as an 8-bit retro webcam. I know that the cartridge playback is probably the main draw here, but I'm all about the counterfeit cartridge detection, especially as there are so many good Pokémon fake carts out there in the wild these days. Having the GB Operator hooked up to your phone when out and about looking for second-hand games.
The GB Operator costs $59.99, which works out at around £45.00. It's compatible with Windows 10 and above or macOS 12 and later. You can also use it on Linux and with the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Raspberry Pi.
We reviewed the GB Operator back in 2021, and to be honest, we've mainly used ours for playing Pokémon games over the years. This was at a time when it was more difficult to get games emulating on our Macs and iPhones, but also, I've always just preferred using my original hardware so I can play with my existing save files. And the GB Operator is so lightweight that you can just stick it in your pocket and sneakily hook it up to your computer at work, on a plane, train, or just while kicking back at home.
Epilogue also have the SN Operator, a larger device used for playing and backing up SNES carts, and they're working on bringing the 64 Operator for N64 games next. If you're after the GB Operator or its SNES counterpart, then you can head over to make a purchase from Epilogue's website, with GB Operator units shipping at the end of October!
