Street Fighter is one of those series that we simply can’t get enough of here at Retro Dodo. It’s a game that’s been with us throughout our gaming lives thus far, with my first introduction into the series all the way back on the SNES, and things have changed a lot since then. Sometimes I can’t believe how quickly we’ve gone from Street Fighter II to Street Fighter 6; the games are so different that younger gamers would hardly believe they’re the same series!
Thanks to the release of Street Fighter 6, the series now has more fans than ever, which is why we’ve had a new iteration of the film announced for over a year now. We have no idea about anything to do with the plot of the film whatsoever at this point or who might be starring in it, but we do know that Capcom has their hands in the mix and that it’s being made in conjunction with Sony, so hopefully it’ll stick true to the spirit of the games that have had such a big impact on us over the years.
Thanks to Variety, we also know that the Street Fighter movie release date will be March 20th, 2026. That’s a heck of a long time to wait, but at least the announcement gives us something else in the calendar to look forward to!
Street Fighter Films Through The Ages
Did you know that Kylie Minogue and Jean-Claude Van Damme starred in ‘Street Fighter’ together back in 1994? It cost $35 million to make and generated $99.4 million at the box office and currently has a rating of 34 on Metacritic which, I think we can all agree, isn’t amazing. Still, that could have been something to do with the $10,000-a-week ‘substance habit’ Van Damme had and the affair he was having with Kylie Minogue at the same time; those two things alone are enough to make anyone lose track of everything they ever knew.
Still, it’s better than the 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li which racked up a dismal rating of just 17. So, the only way (hopefully) is up, and we’re keeping everything crossed that the current hype for Street Fighter 6 and the recent DLC, along with the public’s high standards (remember the outrage over the original Sonic design for the movies?) keeps Sony and Capcom in check. Here’s hoping for the best Street Fighter movie yet!
