The porting world is more exciting than ever right now. Only this morning, I discovered that the very first Diablo game has been ported to the GBA, a console that came out five years after the game's release. And now, the Dreamcast community has been hard at work bringing the online classic World of Warcraft to the Dreamcast, proving once again that Sega's Swansong console was way ahead of its time.
Falco Girgis, the herald of the change for the Dreamcast movement (I've been playing too much Dune), has posted a clip of WoW running on the Dreamcast and taking part in online play. The footage shows fully playable gameplay and spliced segments of @cypress577422 and a buddy playing through multiple areas. According to Falco, the complete game engine has been fit onto two discs, with all classes and abilities working. GM Island and other accessible content aren't included in that, but you can't have everything!
According to Falco, there are some custom features specifically for this Dreamcast port, like new pets and mounts, special quests, and recipes. Arena's up to 3v3 from future expansions, which work in tandem with vanilla PVP systems feature in the port, and you'll get 2x XP every time you level up until you reach Level 20, at which point it will return to normal.
Because it has broadband adapter support, you'll be able to get online and start playing with friends with ease. Check out the video below for some awesome footage of the game in action.
So just when you thought I must be out of crazy shit to share with you that the homebrew scene has gotten running on the Sega Dreamcast... @cypress577422 over here gets freaking WORLD OF WARCRAFT ported to DC! So here's a few minutes of footage spliced together of him questing ONLINE with a buddy, playing WoW the way it was always intended to be played... on a Sayga Dreamcast! What you can immediately see is... yeah, it's fully playable, and even runs surprisingly well for a new port. He's gotten the entire game fitting onto two discs, minus removed or inaccessible content (such as GM island), with all abilities and classes working! Yeah, the textures on the ground especially look pretty low resolution, but funnily enough, right after I was sent these captures, Cypress drastically improved their quality in the next build... because Bruce gave him a bunch of shit over the ground looking blurry in Discord. So that part has already been addressed. 🤣 Some other details about the port include: 1) Custom content for the Dreamcast: pets, mounts, recipes and quests (I've literally seen dude walking around with a Chu Chu Rocket mag from PSO, lmao). 2) Backported the arena 1v1s, 2v2s, and 3v3s from future expansions with their maps and it works in tandem with the vanilla PvP systems. 3) 2X exp until level 20, when it gets reduced. Be sure to give @cypress577422 a follow to show your support for his epic work!

The Dreamcast modding scene has seen some amazing ports of late, from GTA III to Star Fox 64 heading to the console. It seems to have become the mission of the modding community to bring as many N64 games to the console as possible, with Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, and DOOM 64 making the cut. If only Sega could have looked forward in time and seen how the retro gaming community would use their machine, they might have stuck with it and pushed the Dreamcast a little harder. They might have at least made a controller with two thumbsticks instead of leaving it to modders to do - that would have been something!
