Before the likes of Fortnite and PUBG, Unreal Tournament ruled the roost. It's more than just a game; it's a retro gaming institution, which is why Professor Stijn Volckaert and the OldUnreal team play such an invaluable role in the retro community.
For those of you unaware of OldUnreal, they're a non-profit community that supports, updates, develops and plays older Unreal Engine1 games such as Unreal and Unreal Tournament,' as well as Dues Ex, the Harry Potter series of games, Unreal II, Rune, and many more exciting titles.
OldUnreal is essentially a one-stop shop for everything from maps to mods, and now they've released a new patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 with Epic Games' blessing, preserving a slice of 2004 for modern gamers to jump back into.
UT2004 Patch 3374 - Preview 9 sounds a little like a command that
Jean-Luc Picard might have given to someone in Star Trek, but it's actually the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 2 decades. The patch comes after the recent news that UT2004 has been made free to play, with the installers also available from the OldUnreal website.
The patch works in online games, though there will be an updated patch for servers with AntiTCC in the near future. The patch is very impressive, with OldUnreal writing a new SDL backend for both macOS and Linux, bringing widescreen fixes, and creating a new renderer. They don't do things by halves, that's for sure!
Head to OldUnreal for more information and to begin your trip back to 2004!
