I grew up in the 90s, a time when the PS1 was the archenemy of the N64. And as a gamer, you either liked one or the other. You either had N64 exclusives like Zelda and Mario on your school bag and bedding, or you were running around telling everyone that Spyro the Dragon and Final Fantasy were the best games of all time.

I was always Team Nintendo, and I suppose I have always been ever since. The N64 might not have had as many games as the PS1 and might not have been able to play your favourite tunes while you played other games, but it had Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time. Let's not forget shooters like Perfect Dark and Resident Evil 2 as well, the latter of which I think we can all agree is still better than the PS1 offering. 32-bit just can't beat 64-bit!

Still, back in the 90s, one game seemed to reign supreme despite Link and Mario making millions for Nintendo, and for N64 fans like me, the only hope I had of playing them was going round to a friend's house who had a PS1. I'm of course talking about Tomb Raider, Lara Croft's seminal adventure.

I've spoken before about the storage limitations of the N64 carts in my article on Cabbage for the 64DD. A lot of games just couldn't fit on the cartridges back in the day, with CDs being able to hold much larger games. Things have moved on a lot since then, however, and developer Snake is using all of the tools available to us in 2026 to finally give 90s kids like me the dream of having Tomb Raider on the N64.

Snake is using the Libdragon SDK, open-sourced engine TRX, and the Tiny 3D APOI from HailToDodongo to put Tomb Raider onto a 64MB cartridge, and Snake has posted a video showing the game up and running already, despite this being a work-in-progress project.

According to GitHub, the game has been fully implemented. The game isn't available to download yet, but I honestly imagine it won't be long until it's ready to go. For now, you can watch the video above to get your fill until it releases. I'll be grabbing it to play on my Analogue 3D as soon as it lands!
