We're getting a lot of LEGO gaming sets of late, but we seem to be stuck with Nintendo and Sega at the moment. I say stuck; I'm not complaining about having an Ocarina of Time final battle set or seeing Mario Kart figurines coming out of LEGO HQ, but to see something like a Gundam set landing on shop shelves would be something else!
Enter livetobuid, a LEGO Ideas creator from Canada who has brought the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam to life. It's one of the most iconic designs from the series and stands incredibly tall compared to the little minifigure pilot that comes with it. At 42cm/16.5" high and 57cm/22.5" wide, it's an impressive figurine made up of 1979 pieces. It seems that livetobuild knows their Gundam pretty well, as that's the exact year Gundam was released.
The set is a 1:22 scale. According to the information on the LEGO Ideas page, the actual ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam has a height of 18.8 meters and weighs over 80 tons. This LEGO design will have 35 points where it can be adjusted to sit in different stances, complete with flexible rubber connectors. Deploy or store the wings away, depending on space or what story you've conjured up in your head, and you can use both beam sabers or rifles together to create different weapons.
The attention to detail here is amazing, and so is the height. I previously covered a LEGO Freedom Gundam last year which was a lot smaller, more like a tabletop bionicle version of a Gundam. livetobuild's version, however, is a magnificent display piece, and it's gaining some serious traction online.
LEGO Ideas projects have 60 days to reach 100 supporters. It's not even been 24 hours yet, and this project has 445 supporters (444 before I just placed my support!). It now has 424 days to reach 1,000, which I'm sure it will do in a couple of days. If it reaches 10,000, the LEGO Ideas judges might give it the sign-off to turn it into a proper set that we can all purchase, so let's make sure we all show our support and make enough noise about it so that it becomes a reality!
