There’s Now A Version Of Snake That Can Only Be Played By Microscope

What better time to showcase possibly the smallest ever version of Snake than in the actual Year of the Snake? Patrick Gillespie has brought the project to the world via his YouTube channel, delving into a version of Snake that requires you to get your eye to a microscope for some subpixel action.

The game is called Subpixel Snake and can technically played if you put all of your settings to maximum zoom and hold a magnifying glass up to your screen, but even then you would have a tough time of actually building a long snake or seeing anything that’s going on. You can check it out in action and learn more about subpixels in Patrick’s Video below, and you can also have a go at the game on his website. I’ve tried making this work on my Mac and I can’t get anywhere near close enough to see what’s going on, but if you do have a microscope handy or can put your Mac on the other end of the Hubble telescope, then you might stand a chance!

This isn’t the only Snake news we’ve had of late; Balenciaga announced last week that they’re releasing a handheld that plays Snake to celebrate the Year of the Snake. They’re being given out to their VIP customers and also available to win in an online Snake competition.

We also tested out the new Snake widget heading to Nothing phones. In a world of emulation where Smartphones can tell you everything from upcoming weather to ordering for you in a different language, it’s nice to just go back and play a simple game from our past and spend hours building up a high score just like we used to do as kids. It might not be as technically advanced as Subpixel Snake, but at least I can see this one without squinting!
