Talk about two retro idols colliding! We all know the GameCube had a Game Boy player where you could play Game Boy Advance games on it, but to see GBA games on another sixth generation console that wasn't even made by Nintendo is pretty exciting!
As you can see from the featured image above, Pokémon Unbound, one of our favourite Pokémon ROM Hacks, it's running on the PS2 thanks to a new release from GitHub User andymcca called TempGBA-PS2, along with his Ipatix Audio Patcher. It allows users to play GBA games on a Modded PS2 using programmes like LaunchElf.
Playing actual GBA ROMs on a PS2 might be a little niche, but it's a cool blast from the past that we love. Andymcca states that to get the best experience, you're better off playing ROMs from 'an installed Hard Drive' rather than sticking in an USB as ROM files with larger file sizes will run much smoother.
It's not quite as 'instant' as slotting in a Game Bpy cartridge, I'll give you that, but the fact that you could load up your modded PS2 and start playing games like Pokémon Emerald, Kao the Kangaroo, Sonic Advance, and many more using their trusty DualShock controller is so cool. It's sort of the same kind of gimmick as using the Super Game Boy cartridge back on the SNES which I absolutely loved, apart from the fact that games like Pokémon Emerald being on the PS2 feels like some sort of sacrilegious act!
You can head to GitHub to grab a copy of TempGBA for the PS2 and start messing around with your legally acquired ROMs, so long as you had a modded PS2. Of course, I can't tell you where to get one of those from, and I have to stress that you need to provide legally acquired ROM files of the games you're using, but I'm sure you know all about that by now!
