Can you remember back in June when I first reported that there was a Dreamcast port of Sonic Mania Plus? I've thought about it regularly since - a game that came out in 2018 being ported to a console that came out 20 years prior in Japan is some sort of witchcraft, but it's 100% real. It's also a testament to the hard work of the Retro Gaming community who work to make these crazy feats happen.
And now, after months of hard work, Michael Fadely, aka SonicFreak94, has finally managed to get audio working alongside the gameplay, which is running at 60fps after being fit onto 16MB of RAM, I should add!
Sonic Mania Plus for the Sega Dreamcast finally has audio! Here's a 2 minute direct hardware capture of me playing the latest build of @SonicFreak94's port on my actual DC to hype up the Blue Blur's epic comeback to a Sega console... where he has always belonged! pic.twitter.com/UPzxWqXe1z

Check out the video above posted by Dreamcast aficionado Falco Girgis, which at the time of writing has been viewed by over 116,000 people. He's shared a 2-minute video of the Sonic Mania Plus port running on his actual Dreamcast. He's incredibly excited about Sonic's return to the Dreamcast, the last official Sega console.
It all looks and sounds incredible, but then again, I don't know why I'm surprised. So do the other ports of games onto the Dreamcast that I've covered like Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64. The Dreamcast might not have had much time in the spotlight back in the day, but I'm so glad that there are dedicated groups of gamers working to keep it alive in 2026 and beyond. Here's to Falco, SonicFreak94, and all of the other people who have pitched in to help this build - we salute you!
