A fellow Retro Dodo reader dropped us an email this week sharing one of their new projects. I'll be honest we get a lot of emails like this, but more often that not, they don't tickle our fancy or we're just too busy to cover it, but this one had me intrigued from the get go.
It's a fan-made game of F-ZERO for Nintendo DS, a game that we should have got but Nintendo and the team behind F-ZERO seemed like they were winding down the franchise at the time, with F-Zero GX on the Gamecube in 2003 behind the last heavy-hitter. But this didn't stop Justin Prine, the talent behind this new project, known as F-Zero DS, and it's in development with a prototype video available to watch.
Justin has stated to us that: "I've been working on a one man "what if Nintendo had made F-Zero DS" fan project I thought your crew and audience might be interested in that's capable of running on real hardware. It's not much more than a prototype at the moment, but have more course themes, stock courses, P2P multiplayer for the web version, and a 64DD-inspired course maker in the works".
The footage shows some really cool aspects of the bottom screen, more specifically the ability to see behind you using what feels like a reverse mirror, alongside a map, your position, time, and rank. When choosing a course, it will also use the top display to showcase the featured video, and the bottom as a selection menu. You can even create your own course using the bottom display too, which will likely work best with your stylus.
This is such a cool fan-game and one that I serious hope gets fully released because there's so many new dual-screen retro handhelds that this can take full advantage of for those that don't want to experience this on original hardware. We'll be sure to keep prodding Justin and keep you all informed on a future release via our free weekly newsletter, which you should absolutely join!
