How many hours did you put into Rollercoaster Tycoon back in the day? Too many to count (or admit), right? The game first dropped back in 1999; I was 9 years old, and I can still remember the big box that it came in sitting on the shelf in the computer room as a kid. I can also remember buying expansion packs for it too, which is all pretty odd for a guy who doesn’t like rollercoasters in real life. Still, it’s a game that has had a profound effect on my life, giving me all the excitement of the theme park from the comfort (and safety) of my computer chair without having to be thrown around at insane speeds.
For those other Rollercoaster Tycoon fans out there, Atari has dropped the news that Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic is heading to Switch and can be pre-ordered for $25/£22.49 right now! I know it’s been on Steam and Mobile for a long while now, but we all know that Nintendo gets around to these things eventually, and here it is! Classic combines Chris Sawyer’s earlier creations of the first two games and three expansion packs, one of which I remember fondly – Toolkit, Wacky Worlds, and Time Twister. And yes, it was Wacky Worlds that has been living in my brain rent-free for all these years.
And how’s this for something to make you feel incredibly old; the series is celebrating its 25-year Anniversary this year. What with the Sega Saturn having its 30th Anniversary and Pokémon Gold & Silver reaching 25 too, it’s making me realise that I’m slowly becoming retro too!
Head to the Nintendo Eshop to pre-order Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic, which releases on December 5th!
