The way that Nintendo is uploading Donkey Kong games to the Nintendo Switch Online platform, there won’t be any left before the big man opens up his jungle doors to Super Nintendo World goers next week! Yes, Nintendo has released the last Donkey Kong Land game in the set for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to play on their switches a week after announcing that DKL 2 was heading to the platform. That means we’ve had all three Donkey Kong Land games arriving on the Switch in less than 2 weeks – that’s pretty good going if you ask me!
This game sees Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong heading off to search for a place called the Lost World, leaving Dixie & Kiddy Kong teaming up to prove that they have just as much skill as their more famous family members. King K. Rool, masquerading as Baron K. Roolenstein, is also searching for the Lost World with his Kremling army, so expect the usual goon-dodging antics through side-scrolling levels based on the SNES counterpart ‘Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!’
Donkey Kong Land 3 sold the least amount of copies out of the three games with just 1.03 million sales, so while Dixie and Kiddy have the skills to do the job, they obviously didn’t have the pulling power DK and Diddy have with gamers. Still, it’s great that Dixie got to star in her own Game Boy title as well as on the SNES, and it’s nice to have the full set on NSO for players to plow their way through all three games.
As I said with DKL 2, the graphics stay true to the DMG and don’t feature any extra shading we might have seen from using the Super Game Boy SNES cartridge. There was a Game Boy Color version of this game that dropped in Japan, but you’ll be taking a trip down memory lane with that nostalgic green screen for this one.
As I mentioned above, Donkey Kong Country opens up at Super Nintendo World next week, and I’m seriously hoping that Nintendo will add Donkey Kong 64 to NSO before the park opens up for the public as one final celebration. I’ll keep everything crossed and send all my bananas to our favourite Simian Superstar if they make it happen!
