Nintendo has just added four new games to Switch Online for their Sega Genesis / Mega Drive library, exclusively for Switch Online members.
And one June 2023 game update in particular has us quite excited.
So let’s not waste any time talking about why we like new games. Let’s see what we got!
Table of Contents
Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
Surely you know of Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, and its reputation as one of the most difficult video games of all time.
This legendary retro title was developed by Capcom and released in 1988 for arcades and it is the sequel to the equally known Ghosts ‘n Goblins.
Like in Ghosts ‘n Goblins, you control the knight Arthur through a platforming hell of relentless enemies.
The 1990 Sega Master System version of the game introduced a secret armor upgrade shop, which definitely helped with the difficulty if you knew how to locate it.
This is certainly a welcome addition to the growing Nintendo Switch Online library.
And now we can play this directly after Ghosts ‘n Goblins for the NES on Switch Online. If we can manage to actually beat that one!
Landstalker
Landstalker was Sega’s 1992 isometric adventure title that had a small cult following.
It is a bit of a cross between an RPG and isometric platformer. You control Nigel on his quest to find the lost treasure of King Nole.
You can jump, climb, hack, slash, and talk to the many NPCs on your quest.
The game received good reviews from fans, and it did have several sequel/spinoff titles… it just never really got the acclaim of titles like Beyond Oasis or Phantasy Star.
Because it was a bit under the radar at the time, it is great that this title can get some new players in 2023 on the Nintendo Switch thanks to Switch Online.
The Revenge of Shinobi
The Revenge of Shinobi aka The Super Shinobi was released in 1989 by Sega as a followup to Shinobi (1987).
This was Sega’s ever so popular platforming game that is always included on any list of best Genesis titles.
And for good reason!
It’s a ninja game where your throwing stars explode enemies into a ball of fire, and you fight epic bosses that are super-sized or super-powered (or both!).
While the game play will feel quite familiar after the first stage, the game does a good job of offering a wide variety of environments to explore.
And I don’t wanna spoil anything for you if you’ve never played, but one boss in particular is… well… something special. A few of them are, actually.
Really, this is one you just gotta see for yourself. So why not give it a go on Switch Online right now?
Crusader of Centy
Crusader of Centy was Sega’s answer to The Legend of Zelda as part of their “Mega Role-Play Project” campaign.
Yes, Sega literally had a campaign to push out a bunch of RPG titles to catch up to Nintendo’s awesome library.
And I’m not entirely mad at the results of this campaign, as it lead to what is my personal favorite RPG title for the Sega Genesis: Crusader of Centy.
One of the coolest features of the this game is the unique animal companion system.
You can equip up to two companions that open up new abilities to help you progress through the world.
And the entire game is just very charming and has some of the best RPG graphics for the Genesis system.
Easily made its way on our list of the best SEGA RPGs, and it’s certainly my personal favorite non-Sonic title on the Genesis.
Crusader of Centy is available to play on Switch Online right now!
