Castlevania games will never get boring. I don't care whether they're 3D, 2D, 8-bit, or in crisp 4K - I love the premise of these games and the challenge that they provide. And with the resurgence of Shinobi in Art of Vengeance and the likes of Metroid Dread and Hollow Knight, more and more gamers are embracing 2D games and the stylistic choices devs can make when opting create a sidescroller.

When I think of Castlevania, I automatically think of 2D games. It's ingrained into me from years of retro gaming. But the level design on Belmont's Curse is way more impressive than the NES and SNES days. Konami, Evil Empire, and Motion Twin have created something truly spectacular here, with gameplay that feels like a cross between Art of Vengeance and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It has that almost 'hand-drawn comic book' feel that I love, with levels that create depth and visuals that are explosive and colourful.

The story follows Rose Belmont on a mission to destroy Dracula in his castle, just like her family before her. It seems like the Belmonts never get a day to rest and are doomed to constantly try to take down ol' Fang Face for eternity. But I suppose if they had any other choice, we wouldn't have new Castlevania games. It's a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' when it comes to Konami's ethos of making new games in the series, and we're all ok with that.

Belmont's Curse is set 23 years after Dracula's Curse, the NES game that released back in 1989. Rose Belmont looks like an absolute force to be reckoned with, wielding the trademark family whip as she fights the undead soldiers in Drac's employ. Swing from hooks, hang from the ceiling, and call upon all of the skills and powers the Belmonts possess to rid the world of evil once more.

The effects used are stunning, as is the opening cutscene of the trailer which brings those 3D elements in to wow us and help drive the narrative along. Belmont's Curse is available to pre-order now and is set for release on October 15th, 2026! You can rest assured I'll be checking the game out thoroughly when it drops too!
