One of the M64 accessories and features promised early on in the M64 announcement timeline was a physical connection to a CRT TV that would create an authentic and nostalgic experience that a niche audience of retro gamers is seeking. Though it's not for me, even after owning a CRT for years, it's a neat announcement that many gamers have been waiting to hear more about. I myself have even been left in the dark after asking their PR team while finishing up our ModRetro M64 written review.
It was almost like they slipped up mentioning it, or realised it was impossible to make because it wasn't until today during ModRetro's M64 launch livestream that Palmer Luckey mentioned it yet again. I, for one, was confused as nothing was announced, but that was until they made their ModRetro M64 available to buy on their official website, which was then followed my a social post sharing the attached images of this new CRT AV adapter and officially opening up pre-orders for it, starting at $89.99.
You have to hand it to ModRetro, this thing is very well designed and follows the M64's design philosophies thanks to its transparent shell and oversized control knobs. The right, allowing you to twist the knob to Component, RG, S Video or Composite on the fly, the other knob allowing you to switch between PAL, NTSC and custom cartridge modes.
On the back, you'll find an array of ports, such as component, audio, HDMI and a USB-C port for power. No doubt ModRetro will add some subtle LED lighting to make things easier to see. This AV adapter is now available to pre-order starting at $89.99 and will ship "before Christmas". It only comes in a transparent ice version at this moment in time.
