I love my board games and tabletop games. I spend all day looking at screens and a lot of my time playing games on them too, so sometimes it's just nice to put the tech away and get down to some good old-fashioned gaming. Everyone in the same room, phones away, TV off, music on, and an adventure just around the corner.

It sounds like bliss, doesn't it? It reminds me of the good old days before we became obsessed with social media. Essentially, it reminds me of the 90s, which is exactly where this new MemoryCore 32-bit anthology from Horrible Guild takes you. This collection takes 6 classic games from the PS1 and reimagines them as tabletop games, bringing 'memory cards' (very clever), rules, plots, and other items to turn them into a collaborative multiplayer experience.

Here's a list of the games available:

  • Solid State Machine (Action Stealth) - Based on Metal Gear Solid
  • Bloodsong: Hunters of the Night (MetroidVania) - Based on Castlevania
  • Extinction Protocol (Survival Horror) - Based on Resident Evil
  • Final Tournament (Fighting) - Based on Tekken
  • Overdrive Crea (Driving) - Based on Need for Speed
  • Corebound Chronicles (JRPG) - Based on Final Fantasy

Each game comes in an enlarged game case filled with all of the items and components you'll need to play the game, including character boards, pens, and instructions. They look a little more like nerdy pizza boxes to me, but as I'm Italian, I'm also fine with that. The Game Master spins a cardboard game disc to bring special circumstances and features into effect, and on you go!

While the games are based on classic PS1 titles, each one has brand new characters and mechanics as well as a new story. They're simply influenced by the 32-bit era, and anyone who loves Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy is bound to be more up for playing a tabletop game that's heavily influenced by their favourite title than say Monopoly or Scrabble.

The MemoreCore Anthology is available to back now, with prices starting from €44 (£38/$51). The base package gives you the first two games in the set, Solid State Machine and Bloodsong: Hunters of the Night. The Advanced package adds Extinction Protocol and Final Tournament, and the Anthology Package includes all 6 games. You can always purchase the games as add-ons for €22 each too. There's also a platinum pledge level that includes a holographic box sleeve, dice bag, dice, and the CorePlayer magazine.
