A cryptic Tweet from XboxEra co-founder and podcaster Nick Baker points to a Sonic Generations Remaster at an upcoming State of Play.

Posting on the social media platform, Nick Baker explains – ‘On the 31st (roughly), Ronins will Rise, we’ll die stranded, have a rebirth and Kojima will fulfil his dream’. The post continues, ‘Sonic will live in the shadow of his generation while the hills will remain silent until the dawn when you’ll need to catch the metro’.

Baker ended his Tweet with ‘just don’t be a Judas about it‘.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and we’ll run through what we believe Baker is referring to in each statement below, but for retro gaming fans, the most interesting line suggests news relating to an unannounced Sonic Generations Remaster.

PlayStation have now confirmed a State of Play for the 31st January following weeks of rumours. The event will go live on PlayStation’s YouTube channel at 14:00 PT/17:00 ET/22:00 BST/23:00 CET.

A Baker’s Dozen

What makes Baker’s Tweet about a potential Sonic Generations Remaster newsworthy is that this isn’t the first time the podcast host has teased the contents of an upcoming State of Play.

Sony’s last State of Play event took place in September 2023 and revealed fresh looks at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and middle-aged man simulator Baby Steps.

Prior to that show on the 14th September 2023, Baker posted a series of tantalising Tweets about the event, with almost everything in his statements becoming a reality shortly after.

We won’t have long to wait for the 31st January to find out how accurate Nick Baker is on this occasion and whether his cryptic Tweet really does relate to Sonic Generations news or, who knows, maybe even a Shadow The Hedgehog remake.

A New Generation

SONIC GENERATIONS REMASTER

Sega released Sonic Generations in 2011 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in addition to a loose adaptation for the Nintendo 3DS.

Sonic Generations was produced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Blue Blur’s first adventure and saw Modern Sonic teaming up with his Classic counterpart to thwart two versions of Dr. Robotnik across time.

A commercial success, Sonic Generations sold an estimated 1.85 million copies within the first four months following its release. I personally opted for the Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition, seen above, as I’m a sucker for Sonic and will defend him and his occasional jankiness with every fibre of my being!

It goes without saying that if a Sonic Generations Remaster offered a Collector’s Edition then I’d definitely shout at Sega to ‘shut up and take my money’.

The State Of Things To Come

Of course Baker’s Tweet isn’t solely hinting at a Sonic Generations Remaster. Breaking down his words we can deduce what the man behind XboxEra is alluding to.

‘Ronins will Rise’ is a pretty obvious one with Rise of the Ronin scheduled to release exclusively on PlayStation 5 on the 22nd March 2024.

‘We’ll die stranded’ is a clear nod to the upcoming Death Stranding sequel from the man behind Metal Gear Solid and Snatcher. ‘Kojima will fulfil his dreams’ infers the film-loving game creator will reveal footage from the recently announced Death Stranding movie, a joint collaboration between Kojima Productions and Academy Award winning studio A24.

We’re certainly not surprised to see ‘Rebirth’ in Nick Baker’s tease given that Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is only a month away from launch. We’re excited to rejoin Cloud, Tifa and co. following our hands on with the game at MCM Comic Con last year.

Elsewhere, it’s impossible to see the words ‘hills’ and ‘silent’ without connecting them to Konami’s PS5 exclusive Silent Hill 2 remake, and ‘until the dawn’ suggests that the rumoured PS5 remaster of Until Dawn will appear in the State of Play.

Baker suggested we’ll ‘need to catch the metro’, implying a new Metro game is in the works for fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise based on the books by Russian novelist Dimitry Glukhovsky.

Finally, any mention of ‘Judas’ will ignite the fire within the Bioshock fanbase, as the betrayer of Christ is also the title of Ken Levine’s new game, his first full title since Bioshock: Infinite.

Throw in a Sonic Generations Remaster, and this State of Play has the potential to deliver a host of titles for PlayStation fans to be excited about this year.
