How To Get Fly In Pokemon Emerald?

how to get fly in pokemon emerald

Fly is an essential HM that you need to teach one of your Pokemon, or you’ll be running around the entire area on foot or your bike, which, as we all know, isn’t the fastest mode of traveling. Surf might help you to a certain extent, but then again, fly allows you to switch locations in seconds!

As Pokemon Emerald is still one of the most popular and beloved main series games to come out of Gamefreak’s studios, the demand for the game is still pretty high.

And new players often get stuck at some story level as they’re not used to the old storytelling methods.

But don’t worry; this guide will walk you through every step, every battle, and every direction you need to follow to get the HM fly, giving you access to super-fast travel in-game.

So, here’s how to get fly in Pokemon Emerald.

Before even thinking about getting fly, you first need to defeat the gym trainer at Petalburg city and obtain the balance badge.

Once you do this and continue with the story set by the game, you’ll accept surf, which you have to use to get to route 119, where the next part of the story takes place. (You’ll have to go through 118 to reach route 119)

Step 1

Route 119 is full of grass, so you’ll be battling a lot of opponents and also wild Pokemon, so make sure you’re prepared for this in advance. Next, head straight up where the Route guides you.

Step 2

Soon, you’ll end up near a large building which is the Weather Insitute, and for some reason, team Aqua/Magma are there. As usual, you’ll have to face off against the grunts in the building.

Step 3

You’ll have to defeat each and every grunt in the building to make your way out of the place and head on your journey.

Step 4

Once you’re done with the villain teams and start making your way up the map, your rival will appear. Now depending upon your character’s gender, it’ll either be May or Brendan.

Step 5

You’ll have to fight your rival next, and once you defeat them, you will be awarded the HM, Fly!

Requirements for using Fly

After you obtain the coveted HM, you can’t use it directly; you’ll first have to teach it to one of your Pokemon who can learn the move.

Next, you have to continue the journey to get all the badges of the region, as you can’t use the HM outside battle unless you have the Feather badge.

The feather badge can be obtained by defeating the Gym Trainer Winona. You can find her in the Fortree City Gym, which she is in charge of.

She uses Flying types mostly, so taking her on won’t be hard as she doesn’t have a lot of versatility in her team.

Pokemon that can learn Fly!

Once you obtain the HM, you need a Pokemon which can learn the move. If you already have one, no problem, go ahead and use it.

But if you haven’t gotten the chance to capture a Pokemon that can use the move for some reason, below is a list of Pokemon in Pokemon Emerald that can learn the move fly.

The Pokemon are Salamence, Rayquaza, Crobat, Zatu, Skarmory, Taillow, Swellow, Wingull, Pelliper, Vibrava, Flygon Swablu, and Altaria. Not all these Pokemon will be available to be captured at this time in the game, but some will be.
