Fishing? In Sonic? Can’t be! Well, guess again.
Although Sonic Frontiers is being sold as a fast paced adrenaline ride, in between the chaos there’s pockets of calm. Ideal for when you’re on your last nerve after trying to take down a Titan – they’re not for the faint hearted. Maybe try to use Retro Dodo’s how to defeat Wyvern guide next time? It’s good prep.
Yes, the Starfall Islands can be as stressful as they are aesthetically intriguing, especially when trying to find all the collectibles. We also have a great guide on how to collect and use seeds for those on a mission to boost Sonic’s defence and power.
But did you know there’s another way? In fact, most of the collectibles you’re searching for can be obtained through the art of fishing.
If I’ve piqued your interest, and the words Sonic and fishing together in a sentence really should, then grab your fishing rod because it’s time to catch a whopper!
How To Fish In Sonic Frontiers
To fish in Sonic Frontiers players need to find and unlock the fishing spots on each island using gears. Big Cat will then teach you to use the left thumbstick and the A button to cast your line. A splash will appear if a fish bites; press A to begin reeling it in, then press A again when the white ring is inside the red circle.
All in all, it’s an undemanding little mini game.
However, there are a few more tidbits of information you’ll need before fishing becomes second nature to you.
Firstly, you need to pay Big Cat purple coins to fish, with each island’s cost increasing.
Secondly, every time you successfully catch a fish you’ll be awarded a fishing token. These tokens can then be exchanged for collectibles.
Thirdly, different fish yield different amounts of fishing tokens; the bigger the catch, the bigger your prize.
And lastly, you can sometimes catch more than fish, such as treasure chests and scrolls. When I caught myself a chest I found a golden token inside, which is the Sonic Frontiers equivalent of a Willie Wonka golden ticket.
Where To Find Fishing Spots In Sonic Frontiers
To find fishing spots in Sonic Frontiers you need to look for a black fish symbol on the map. Four out of the five islands have them. When you reach a fishing spot, interact with the portal using the Y button.
There’s no limit on how long you can fish at one spot, or how many times you can return. It’s also worth mentioning that you can switch from one map to the other, making returning to a previous fishing spot quick and easy.
Notice how the map is pretty much a necessity to successfully finding Big Cat and his fish? Now would be the time to learn how to unlock the map and fast travel in Sonic Frontiers if you haven’t already.
