Folks, it's time to meet Felipe64. N64GameBuilder has showcased the new tool in a new YouTube video, with some of the funkiest background music I've ever heard, in which they port the Final Fight onto the N64, a game that released almost 4 decades ago.
According to the description on the YouTube video (which you can watch below), Felipe64 allows users to 'create hitboxes, easily export data, and configure state machines using a visual interface.' It should be noted that Felipe64 doesn't compile games directly, but rather allows users to generate and export data assets to be used in Libdragon projects.
So what you're looking at on the video is assets from Final Fight imported into Felipe64 that can be used to make a playable demo. I'm not the world's biggest fan of 2D games on the N64, it has to be said. That's mainly because I grew up with the SNES and then championed the move to 3D once we harnessed the power of 64-bit.
There were only ever 4 games that you'd class as 2D fighters on the system, so I'm not sure Final Fight 64 would have been a record breaker when it came to sales. Still, it's cool to see how quickly you can put something like this together using Felipe64, and it opens up a whole host of new possibilities for homebrew game creators.
If you're a software dev who uses Libdragon and wants to enhance their N64 gaming skills, then this is definitely worth looking into!
