Emu64 XL Emulator Brings 80’s Nostalgia To The App Store

Well, Apple’s rollout of emulators didn’t kick off with as much of a bang as we all thought, did it? There was a lot of hype about iGBA being available for download, with the app shooting to the top of the recommended charts. Until it became apparent that iGBA had stolen all of its code from GBA4iOS, that is.

Riley Testut, the creator of GBA4iOs and a name that you might have heard of if you’ve used Delta before, showed his disappointment about how this clone of his work managed to get through Apple’s stringent testing and copyright process. Still, the fact that the app was taken down was nothing to do with piracy and more to do with an unauthorised clone, which means that emulators are still coming, and the latest app takes us all the way back to 1982.

Everybody Do The Commodore

The Emu64 XL emulator is the latest offering for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, and while it might not be able to play the latest Tomb Raider remasters or get you up and running on Crash Team Racing, it is a great piece of software for any nostalgic gaming fans looking to play the Commodore 64 titles from their youth on their smartphones.

The app is described by developer Raffaele Amuso as a fast and very easy to use Commodore 64 emulator. It’s written in the CBM64 language and is a basic emulator that, while having lots of exciting features, doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to work out how to use.

In terms of graphics and user interface, it’s just like playing on a mini C64. The keyboard looks the same, and you can link up external controllers and joysticks to really kick your gaming experience up a notch. There’s scope for gamers to develop their own software for the emulator and upload them as T64 and D64 files too.

Essentially, it’s a quiet, unassuming emulator that does what it says on the tin. And for now, it doesn’t look to have been copied from an existing emulator, so it looks like it could be here to stay! Take a look at the App Store for more details!
