We all like a reunion story, right? We've been following news on Ecco the Dolphin Ed Annunziata, checking the Ecco the Dolphin website on a daily basis to figure out what's going on every time we've heard a rumour or caught wind of something new coming. Well today, the best news has finally arrived, and it seems that Ed has got the band back together after 30 years to work together on 'a remaster done as it should'.
A&R Atelier announced today that Ecco the Dolphin: Complete is heading our way to take us on a 'journey through time and through the history of one of gaming's most iconic franchises'. 30 years of history, from the Master System, to the Mega Drive/Genesis, and into a new game built by the team that first brought Ecco to our consoles. And you'll be able to connect with the dev team via the Ecco the Dolphin website today as part of Earth Day.
The Ecco Dev team is made up of the father of Ecco Ed Annunziata, along with original members of the team who made up the programming, art, and composition teams. It makes sense that the people working on creating the remaster and a brand new Ecco adventure had to be the people who created the original - they understand this game, their spirit and enthusiasm fill the very ocean that Ecco swims through. It's poetry in motion!
Ecco the Dolphin: Complete will have both the original Ecco game and The Tides of Time, with a third new title bringing them both together and leading both Ecco and the players into a modern era. There isn't any mention of Ecco Jr. or Defender of the Future; this new collection seems to focus on the first two pioneering games and Ed and the team's vision of how Ecco will thrive in 2026.
This new release will come with speedrunning support from the off, as well as achievements and leaderboards. Being competitive is the nature of the game, and the team wants to create unique ways to play for players of all abilities.
I'm incredibly excited about Ecco returning, especially with a new adventure for us to sink our teeth into (or flap our flippers at, for want of a better phrase). I hope that the team has kept the same elements that made the soundtrack so exciting when it comes to the audio for the new game, and that Ecco continues to teach people about environmentalism and treating our oceans with respect for years to come.
Head to the Ecco the Dolphin website to keep up to date with everything Ecco related, and I'll be sure to let you know more about the new release as soon as I get it!
