Sometimes I wake up in a morning and ask myself ‘what year am I living in?’
I grew up in a time where kids were playing with figurines from 90s culture like Power Rangers and characters from our favourite games. Everyone had one them, and in the case of Goldar and Baboo from Rita Repunzel’s evil gang, they looked the part. They oozed cool and were more than just toys – they were epic figurines that looked great whether being played with or not.
JAKKS know that big kids like collecting figurines just as much as small ones, and they’ve been recreating figures from our gaming pasts for us to spend all of our hard earned cash on.
We recently covered their new figurine of Axel Stone from 1991’s Streets of Rage, and now they’re returning with an ode to the epic game Altered Beast.
Rise From The Grave And Sprint Down To Walmart
There’s our titular character in all his glory. If you’ve never played Altered Beast, then you might be a little confused, so allow me to give you a crash course in one of our favourite SEGA titles.
Zeus has called upon a champion to rescue Athena from the underworld. The only man for the job was deceased, however, so he resurrects him and sets him on his mission.
By collecting three Spirit Balls, Zeus’ champion can turn into a beast and take advantage of heightened powers. In further levels, players can use Spirit Balls to turn into a Weredragon and a Weretiger, but the wolf from the front of the game cover is undoubtedly the most iconic form.
The set comes with a Spirit Ball too to make things even more believable… or as believable as this whole thing can be.
This Altered Beast Werewolf Figurine is available from Walmart for the next couple of weeks, so head down to your nearest store to grab one before they disappear!
A Title Being Resurrected
Back in December 2023 we covered the news that SEGA had filed a new trademark for Altered Beast, prompting rumours that the game was about to receive a new updated remaster.
As of yet, we haven’t heard anything more about why the patent was filed, but players can still play Altered Beast on the SEGA Mega Drive Mini console and the Nintendo Switch Online platform if they don’t have access to a Mega Drive or Genesis.
JAKKS Toys also worked on some Sonic the Hedgehog figurines back in 2022 as well as some fantastic Mario figurines that we’re definitely going to be adding to our collection. The last figurine in the series is reportedly the Ai-Ai figure complete with Monkey Ball, but we’re wondering if, thanks to our continued coverage and excitement, they might make Rocket Knight or Earthworm Jim figure just for us!
